The character to the right is an IGUS. Proposed by Murray Gell-Mann,
an IGUS is an Information Gathering and Utilization System. It collapses
quantum probability waves by "looking" at them. IGUSES create
the universe by turning waves into particles.
IGUSES are creatures of information theory. These theories, along with
theories of complexity are the metaphysics of physics.
Some theories say that information is as much a part of the universe
as matter
or energy. They liken information to entropy and some pose a Law of Conservation
of Information akin to Maxwell Laws of the Conservation of Energy.
Some information theories say that quantum particles, like electrons
or protons, are pure information. Quantum attributes such as spin, momentum,
etc. are descriptions with no physical characteristics that we could ever
relate to.
Theories of complexity are sometimes invoked to explain how we got here
- how life emerged and evolved. According
to these theories it was no accident that self-aware creatures evolved
to ask questions about themselves and their world - although the fact
that they are bipedal with skin instead of scales might be accidental.
